Welcome! 🥰

Woohoo, you're here!Yay! Thank you so much for taking my genre course. I'm really excited to have you here and can't wait to hear how you get on with the lessons or to answer any questions you've got.

What to expect Here's a little recap of what's in store.

What the course is about: Understanding, exploring and defining different genres in kidlit and figuring out what genre you're writing in (or want to write in)
Who the course is for: Primarily writers of middle grade and YA fiction (whether you're published or not) but the lessons apply to all fiction audiences including adult
How the course works: This is an asynchronous, on-demand course which means you can take the lessons in your own time and you’ll have lifetime access

The purpose of this course is to explain and explore the concept of 'genre' and how it applies to children's books and their authors. Although I'll be focusing on children's and YA fiction here, the advice about narrowing down your genre really applies to all fiction, whichever audience you're writing for. It also applies whether you're self publishing or seeking traditional publishing.

As you work through the course, please let me know if you have any technical trouble or problems downloading the course content.

NEW FOR 2025!I'm always trying to make my courses more valuable, so I've added something really fun! At the end of the course you'll find the option to apply for a personalised genre review, where I'll ask you to send a couple of your answers to the exercises in this course and I'll record a short report on what genre I think your book sounds like and if you're on track to hit genre conventions and reader expectations. This is included in the course so there's no extra fee!
