What is your protagonist trying to achieve in the manuscript? If they're trying to work out who killed their teacher, the genre is probably ‘mystery’. If their goal is survival there are several genres that might fit, depending on what they're trying to survive: flesh-eating virus? Could be apocalyptic science fiction. A haunted house? Probably supernatural horror. A bear? It might be an adventure story. A government sanctioned fight to the death? Sounds like dystopian!
